The gates of any busy site are a crucial zone. They are not only a physical boundary, but also a place of security and the passing of information. At Placo, they struggled with just that before implementing Peripass. “We welcome between 200 and 300 trucks every day, and there are a lot of drivers from abroad.”
“Peripass allows us to have truck drivers register themselves in 15 languages.”
That means Placo Saint-Gobain can be sure that drivers have read and understood the security protocols of their location. At the kiosks, the drivers register themselves, and at the end of the flow, they receive a short quiz to check their safety understanding.
“Before Peripass, truck drivers had to register with a person at reception. That means it was a manual process; all information had to be noted, checked, and stored by one of our employees.” Now, everything happens digitally, including giving drivers their personal access code to the site.
When drivers register and receive their personal PIN codes, they provide all the relevant information Placo needs to process the shipments quickly and efficiently. Order number, shipper, license plate, phone number,… “Everything gets stored in their profile so we can go back and verify it in case of an issue.”
After entering the site, trucks are directed to the weighing bridge, where drivers use their personal PIN codes again. Only when the whole process is completed correctly will the barrier open and can they move to the parking or their assigned loading dock.
“The whole entrance flow is standardised and secure.”
In the control tower, the dispatchers see all registered trucks appear in the queue. From there, they get sent to the correct warehouse and loading dock.
“Our site is over 42 hectares, with six warehouses and a separate parking lot for detached trailers. Peripass gives us that much-needed insight and visibility.”
“Before Peripass, we were working blind too often. Because we did not have a good overview, we struggled with workflow and long waiting times. Often communication, too. Now, we have streamlined the whole process, increased safety, and communicate better with the truck drivers.”
The large volumes of shipments combined with the multiple warehouses in Vajours has created issues in the past, but the dispatchers no longer have any blind spots. The visibility also extends to the large fleet of containers, allowing for easy movements and transports.
Placo has a specific parking lot for container management. In that waiting parking, the trailers are stored when they are empty, and once they are ready to be loaded, they are moved to the correct dock. “We use the Yard Operator App to keep track of their location, their order numbers, and their loading status.”
“Before Peripass, we did not have a clear flow management system or enough data, which made it hard to follow the workflows. This lack translated to safety issues and language barriers. But now, we have all that visibility, data and insights.”
What is next for Placo Saint-Gobain at Vajours? “We are looking to digitise even more. We are considering the next steps, whether going fully paperless or automating the entire site.”
